Should
Plastic Bag be Banned Everywhere?
Plastic is a material that is widely used for the
manufacture of household appliances, automotive and so on. The use of plastic
materials is increasingly widespread because it is strong and not easily
damaged by weathering. One of the oldest and most popular forms of packaging
are plastic bag. They are used for food storage, packaging and transporting
goods and for waste disposal among many other uses. In various
countries, plastic bags are widely used when we shop, especially in market
areas. Therefore, waste from plastic bags is piling up. The use of plastic bags
makes life easier, but there are also many negative impacts on the environment.
Indonesia is ranked second in the world after
China, which produces 187.2 million tonnes of plastic waste in waters. This is
related to data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry which states that
plastic produced from 100 stores or members of the Indonesian Retailers
Association (APRINDO) in just one year has reached 10.95 million pieces of
plastic bag waste. This amount is equivalent to an area of 65.7 hectares of
plastic bags (Jambeck, 2015). Data from Making Oceans Plastic Free (2017)
states that an average of 182.7 billion plastic bags are used in Indonesia each
year. Of this amount, the total weight of plastic bag waste in Indonesia
reaches 1,278,900 tons per year. There are 2 types of plastic bags, namely
decomposable and non-degradable. In Indonesia, there are more types of plastic
bags that cannot be decomposed so that plastic waste in Indonesia is easy to
find in the surrounding environment. In my opinion, reducing plastic bags in
Indonesia is still quite difficult considering that in Indonesia there are
still many traditional markets and 90% of them use plastic bags. Even so, on
the other hand, I have also seen significant changes when we buy junk food,
many restaurants don't use plastic bags anymore and replace them with paper
packaging which is easier to decipher.
Should Plastic Bag be Banned Everywhere? In my personal
opinion is no. However, we still need plastic bags for our daily life. However,
we can change our lives by processing plastic waste properly. As an example,
previously in Indonesia there was a boom with a “Bank Sampah” where it was an
attempt to manage waste into useful items. Many in Indonesia have also
implemented plastic waste handling with the 3R concept (Reuse, Reduce and
Recycle).
In conclusion, The use of plastic bags in
Indonesia still cannot be banned. Because, indeed we still need it. However, as
a way out, we can further reduce its use, for example, if we are traveling we
can bring our own tote bags from home so that when we are shopping we don't
need to use plastic waste. Or when we shop at the market, we can bring our own
containers to buy such as garlic, shallots, chilies, etc. So that sellers in
the market do not need to put our small groceries in plastic bags. We as
citizens of Indonesia must be able to maintain the cleanliness of our country's
environment, the slightest change can change our environment
