Reading as Part of Writing
Reading is an integral part of the whole writing process,
and therefore this chapter is concerned with helping you to discover new ways
of tackling the reading that you have to do for your studies. Many, if not
most, students find reading difficult when they first begin to study at
university. This is partly because the material can seem rather unfamiliar,
both in terms of the terminology that is used and because of the ways in which
ideas and concepts are written.
5.1 Approaching Reading
In general, skim-reading is not a useful strategy for
reading as a student, but you may well be used to doing this in other contexts.
You may also be used to skim-reading when you’re surfing the Internet. So now,
instead of skim-reading you will be developing ways of concentrating on large
chunks of quite dense text and making sense of them. It is likely that you will
find it necessary to concentrate more intensely than you usually do when you
are reading.
5.2 Choosing Your Reading for an assignment
The first thing to do is to consult the reading list for books and articles that seem relevant to your particular assignment. Doing a library search, by keywords or subject, is also useful if the references on your reading list are already on loan from the library. u. At this stage it is important that you pay particular attention to the signposting in the book; this will tell you how the book deals with the subject matter that is relevant to your assignment. Obviously, it is not always easy to get the general idea of a book by skimming through the headings in a chapter, but spending a little bit of extra time working with the index and checking different sections of the book, before you actually start reading, will ensure that you do not waste as much time reading inappropriate material or trying to adapt what you have read to your needs.
5.3 Working with Your Reading
There seem to be two major difficulties that students have
when they are reading academic books and materials. One is struggling with the
ways in which things are written. The other is the length of time that things
can take to read. Many students express surprise at the need to make repeated
readings of the same material. . Academics themselves find it necessary to
‘repeat-read’ articles and books. This is in part due to the dense nature of
such texts and the fact that so many ideas are packed into the text.
5.4 Thinking about The Different Texts
However, whatever the kinds of text chosen, thinking about
the differences that you have identified can help with your reading. If you can
see why you find reading a particular article, chapter or book difficult – in
other words, what it is about the text and your reading of it that makes it
hard – then you are halfway to solving the problem.
